Resume Guidelines

Our team has got together to give some advice to help you update or build your resume! From what information you should include on your summary up to how to present it. We hope this information is useful to you.

SUMMARY

  • A solid summary of 3-6 bullet points that quantify your experience and skills. Hiring managers like to see career progression.

  • Avoid subjective statements such as “passionate worker”.

  • Try to encompass while showcasing your entire resume in 3-6 bullets

TECHNICAL SKILLS

  • Most work done today involves computers, machines, etc. It’s imperative that you are able to communicate what applications you are skilled with and comfortable using. Be as specific as possible.

  • For example, don’t just list “Excel” as a skill. Add something that alludes to your level of proficiency like, “Excel - Pivot Tables, VLOOKUPs” or “Superuser - SAP R/3”.

EDUCATION & CERTIFICATIONS, TRAINING, ETC.

  • If you have earned a degree, be sure to list what type of degree it is. It’s not enough to say “Degree - Business”. Is your degree a BA, BS? What was the major of field of study? The best way to showcase this is: “BA - Accounting” or something similar. Also include the year that it was earned and the full name of the institution it was earned from.

  • For certifications, it helps to list the name of the certifying body, the year it was earned, and if/when it will expire (if applicable).

EXPERIENCE

  • Be sure to add the name of your employers and your job titles. Always include the month/year you started a position as well as the month/year you separated from it.

  • Experiences should be bulleted and include concise statements around duties and accomplishments. Be specific, but brief. Only include the last 5-6yrs of experience unless the job you are applying for requires more.

PACKAGING

  • Do not use fancy fonts, borders, lines, etc. The exception to this is if you are applying to a job that requires creativity such as a graphic designer or another artistic role.

  • Your resume should be “clean” and easy to read. It should also include keywords related to the jobs you are applying for. There is no “one resume fits all”. Be prepared to make adjustments to it when applying for different jobs.

  • Be sure to proofread your resume before sending it out. Spelling and grammar mistakes are a fast-track to the Recycle Bin.
